What Health Physics and Radiation Safety contributes to Cardinal Health

  • Will assist in designing, developing and implementing Radiation Safety procedures, programs, processes, and systems to ensure compliance with regulatory and company requirements and to eliminate or minimize radiation risks to the company, its employees, the environment and the communities in which it does business.

The primary work environment consists of a professional office, production, laboratory environment, and the entire radiopharmaceutical manufacturing facility. The facility is operated under well-controlled and closely monitored conditions that are regulated by both State and Federal agencies, and that are enforced by the corporate internal quality and regulatory groups. Each staff member will receive specific training in keeping radiation exposures within regulatory guidelines and he/she will be routinely monitored for their exposure to radiation. Noise levels are considered low to moderate.

Accountabilities

This incumbent reports to the Manager, Radiation Safety/EHS

  • Works on projects of moderate scope and complexity
  • Researches regulatory issues and product development and testing procedures to ensure compliance with appropriate local, state and federal regulatory agencies (NRC, DOT, EPA, etc.)
  • Audits and inspects the facility to ensure compliance with Company, local, state and federal regulations
  • Participates and responds to investigations of radiological incidents and emergencies and recommends appropriate corrective actions when needed
  • Identifies possible solutions to a variety of technical problems and takes actions to resolve. Demonstrated knowledge of the technical aspect of operation health physics including: instrumentation, radiation measurements, decontamination, dosimetry, direct and passive radiation measurement
  • Assist with the coordination and management all aspects of the radiation safety program, including radioactive waste processing
  • Identify potential safety hazards related to radioactive materials
  • Informs the RSO when situations require follow-up actions
  • Assists in maintaining the radiation safety instrument program. Arranges and coordinates equipment calibration, maintenance, and repair. Evaluates radiation safety instrument maintenance records. Determines, or assists in determining, appropriate radiological instrumentation required for detection and quantification of specific radioisotopes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Radiological Health Sciences or related field with two or more years of professional full-time experience in a health physics role
  • Past experience with radioactive waste preferred
  • Past xperience with radiation survey equipment preferred
  • Understanding of radioactive material equipment software
  • Ability to hear, write, and speak clearly to communicate effectively
  • Manual dexterity required for occasional reach and lifting of small objects
  • Demonstrated manual dexterity to manipulate remote arms
  • Ability to lift lead containers weighing up to 50 lbs

  • Demonstrates depth and breadth of knowledge in the area of hazard recognition, evaluation and control.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of radiation monitoring instruments and equipment.
  • Applies working knowledge in the application of concepts, principles, and technical capabilities to perform varied tasks.
  • Ability to maintain current knowledge of federal and state regulations (NRC, DOT, EPA, etc.)
  • Ability to receive Authorized User status on Radioactive Materials license.
  • A successful candidate must be accountable and possess self-motivation.
  • Can apply good judgment within defined parameters.
  • Can perform efficiently under general guidance, may receive more detailed instruction on new projects.
  • Work reviewed by manager for sound reasoning and accuracy.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision from the radiation safety officer (RSO) using health physics principles.
  • Ability to communicate with the regulators such as the NRC in RSOs absence.
